078a postulantsOnce an applicant is accepted, he will be informed of the entrance date and what personal items he is permitted to bring with him. Once he moves into the residence he becomes a Postulant. The period of Postulancy lasts for three months, but may be extended by the Superior.

At his discretion, the Superior may choose to extend the period of Postulancy for certain individuals in order to further their spiritual and intellectual formation, which could eventually help in their advancement toward further studies for the priesthood. After the successful completion of undergraduate studies or the equivalent, at a school approved by the Superior, he may accept the Postulant into the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius’s Novitiate if he fulfills the standard conditions.

The period of Postulancy familiarizes the Postulant with religious life in the context of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. It should help the Superior and the Postulant make a responsible decision about whether the Postulant should move into the Novitiate to become a member of the Institute.

With the intent of becoming a member of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, those seeking entry as Postulants during this period have the following goals: to familiarize themselves with the rich liturgical history of the Roman Catholic Church, both in the Present Rites of the Church, as well as its Traditional Rites, a desire to participate in the Liturgical Offices of the Church according to the present norms, and to develop in the communal life of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius as indicated in the Constitutions.

During this period of Postulancy, he will be immersed in the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius’s daily work, life and prayer life, viz., communal celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, Daily Mass, devotion to Our Blessed Lady, Eucharistic Adoration and lectio divina.

During the time of Postulancy, the individual is to provide all necessary insurance, e.g. health and automobile. He is to retain all his personal property and financial assets.

The Postulant’s progress is reviewed regularly by the Superior. The following signs indicate that the Postulant may have a vocation to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius: a sincere desire to live the communal life; the necessary physical, mental and emotional health, as well as a humble docility rendering the Postulant eager to learn and be open to life as a member of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.

The Postulant may decide to withdraw from the program at any time. He may also be dismissed at any time for a just cause. If a Postulant leaves or is not advanced to the Novitiate, he is not to expect any recompense from the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius for time, talents and the like, shared with the community.
