Canons Regular of St. John Cantius

Father C. Frank Phillips, C.R., and 3 other members of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, along with the Most. Rev. Joseph N Perry, auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, joined the more than 300 delegates from 35 countries that met in Rome to reflect on liturgical formation, celebration and mission as part of the Year of Faith on the fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council.

Above all, we need to promote authentic liturgical renewal in all its Catholic richness and diversity. We need to promote the Sacred Liturgy celebrated as the Church gives it to us, as the Fathers and Popes of the Second Vatican Council desired.

Pope Benedict taught us the importance of the ars celebrandi, reminding us that ‘everything related to the Eucharist should be marked by beauty’ (Sacramentum Caritatis n. 41). He taught us that there needs to be no opposition between the older and newer forms of the Roman Rite – that both have their rightful place in the Church of the New Evangelisation.

Liturgical formation, liturgical celebration and the mission of the Church: all three are intrinsically related. That is why we are here: to consider this relationship and to examine its meaning and importance for the Church at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
(Excerpts from the opening remarks by Bishop Dominique Rey)
Sacra Liturgia, held from June 25th to June 28th, 2013, was called by the Most Rev. Dominique Rey, the Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon, France and organized by Dom Alcuin Reid, a renowned liturgical scholar. The conference brought together a wide range of international speakers including Cardinal Raymond Burke, Cardinal Malcom Ranjith, Bishop Peter Elliott, Father Uwe Michael Lang, and Tracey Rowland, among others.

The landmark conference took place at the centrally located Pontifical University of Santa Croce and included more than sixteen conferences. Solemn celebration of Mass and Vespers in the ordinary and extraordinary forms of the Roman Rite were celebrated in the adjoining Basilica of S. Apollinare.

The conference was attended by a diverse microcosm of the Catholic Church: bishops and abbots, lay men and women, people responsible for liturgical preparation and formation in parishes and seminaries; many clergy, religious and seminarians.

Newly ordained deacons Kevin Mann, SJC and Joshua Caswell, SJC of the Canons Regular assisted in the liturgies, most notably serving as the principal deacons for the Solemn Mass celebrated by His Emminence Cañizares Cardinal Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Participants concluded the conference by gathering with His Holiness Pope Francis for the Mass of the Conferral of the Pallium at St. Peter’s Basilica for the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29th.

The various conferences delivered at Sacra Liturgia 2013 will be published in English by Ignatius Press. You can find out more about this conference and view photos at the Official website of Sacra Liturgia 2013

I hope that the conference Sacra Liturgia 2013 has contributed to this liturgical renewal in ‘the spirit of the liturgy’ as taught by Benedict XVI and I hope that it has been a source of inspiration and hope. (His Excellency, Bishop Dominique Rey)
